When I first started my journey in fitness and health, my only goal was to lose the baby weight I had put on after my first pregnancy, which was right around 30 pounds. I tried going to the gym, but if I’m being honest, I had no idea what to do once I showed up. I spent months and countless hours in a space where I saw NO results. Ultimately, I canceled my gym membership and found myself struggling to find hope. I knew there was a solution somewhere, but I had no idea what that solution was. So, like many people, I went and tried a ton of things that also didn’t work - pills, wraps, free workouts I found online, and “meal planning” off of Pinterest with no direction. And again, saw little to no results.
I was desperate for change, but I had no direction. I had no one leading the way. I was hopeless. I had NO energy to care for my kiddo. I was lost as a new mom with postpartum depression. I would cry when getting dressed for anything that required an outfit aside from sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt. I was irritable. I was sad.
On paper, life looked great. From the outside looking in, I shouldn’t feel any of those depressive thoughts because I had done all of the standard things in life. I got married. I had kids. I had both an undergraduate and master’s degree. I had a place to live. I was making enough money (barely, but no one knew that), and I was “happy”… or so it seemed.
But in reality, I knew that I couldn’t continue to live like this for much longer. I had to make a change. I remember talking to my mom about this online fitness/health gig I had found. We were both a bit skeptical, but we also knew that I had to try something. The “Kayla” who was full of light, spark, laughter, and silliness was gone after having kids… and we had to get her back.
I began my journey with this online company, not knowing what to expect, but committing to dive all-in. My only goal in the entire year of 2018 was to make working out a habit. I wasn’t acutely focused on the weight loss, because I knew that I had to start small, with a single goal that would lead to something better. I finished my biggest program that year - 80 days, 7 days/week, approx. 60 min workouts, and a relatively strict nutrition plan. It was sooooo intense, but it was exactly what I needed. After finishing that program, I went on to conquer a slew of others. This habit helped me to see that I could have everything I wanted if I was willing to work for it, and create a habit and routine to serve the goal. Little by little, I started biting off other goals - waking up early, journaling before school (I’m a teacher), and building an online business. I started to believe in myself, which lead to the ultimate elimination of all those prior feelings. After just a few months, I started to see that I was getting ME back.
